Running head: UNIT 7 LAB QUESTIONS
Unit 7 Lab Question
Michelangelo’s Drawings
1. What are your impressions of the drawings in this exhibition?
I am impressed with the way Michelangelo had perfected the art of presenting ideas in an
artistic manner. During the period of renaissance, his drawings were based on every genre.
Michelangelo had developed indomitable passion for his drawings and he viewed all his artistic
works as necessary tools for his life. I am impressed with the manner in which had used to
protect his drawings like precious gems. He produced high quality works that are more than one
hundred. I am also impressed by the ideology that Michelangelo once destroyed his drawings
before his death. Most impressing drawing of his lifetime is images that depict life of Jesus
Christ. Notably, drawings that are related to Madonna and his child are my all time favorite. For
example, strong and powerful muscles well expressed in contour lines appear to be yielding to
massive figure.
2. How do the drawings compare to those of Da Vinci that are shown in the unit?
Just like Da Vinci, Michelangelo’s drawings are characterized by unique artistic features. He
had perfected the art of using hybrid colors to make sure that the message is well portrayed to the
target audience. Notably, Michelangelo’s drawings revolved around major themes such as life of
Jesus Christ and love. For example , he sent many drawings to Tommaso dei Cavalieri who
developed passionate attachment with Michelangelo. To show his unconditional love to the
young beauty, Michelangelo presented a series of drawings on classical mythological themes.
Evidently, Da Vinci made drawings on love and they have been highly preserved for long time.
Just like Da Vinci, Michelangelo made drawings that valued the importance of nature and
respect for human life. He is ranked as one of the highest artists of all time. Michelangelo made
paintings on the double tomb of the Magnifici at the entrance of the chapel though this was never
realized or appreciated in any way. Michelangelo faced criticism from section of people in
society just like Da Vinci. Generally, works of these two artists are amazing.
3. Which of the drawings do you find most interesting? Why?
I am impressed most by the painting that depicts crucifixion of Jesus Christ. The drawing
replica of what is contained in the Holly Book (Bible). This drawing relates to the life of Jesus
Christ such as descent, while on the cross and entire career. The drawing does depict suffering of
Jesus Christ in front of Virgin Mary and St John. In this drawing, Michelangelo did not integrate
any scenic element but instead left the entire background to be neutral. The drawing does show
different aspects of human emotions. This is my favorite of all his paintings.
Artists in Context
Leonardo Da Vinci and Raphael are top painters and artists during the renaissance period.
Their work do reflect true picture of the renaissance period. For example, being a genius, Da
Vinci epitomized the renaissance humanist model. As an architect, painter, anatomist, geologist
and cartographer, he worked on key issues that were popular at that time. On the other hand,
Raphael is admired for his popular, clear, visual achievement and the neoplatonic ideal of human
grandeur. With other artists, they influenced art by forming traditional trinity of great masters.
Da Vinci and Raphael left huge body of work that acting as reference pint for current artists.
However, work of Da Vinci is more popular as compared to paintings made by Raphael.
