EMERGING ISSUES IN MANAGEMENT (MGMT 440)
PAPER INFORMATION FOR FALL 2018
Introduction
Allow me to repeat the applicable section from the course syllabus regarding the paper:
Paper. There will be a paper worth 50 points which will be based on current ethical/legal business topics which
I will assign. The paper should be 12-15 pages, double-spaced. Please use footnotes – not just a bibliography – to cite
to your sources. You must work with a group of at least three students. Notify me in writing as to your group’s
membership no later than 11:59 p.m. on September 13, 2018, after which you cannot change your group’s membership.
The paper must be submitted no later than 11:59 p.m. on December 20, 2018. You may submit your paper by way of
hard copy or e-mail attachment. I will not “review” or “edit” papers prior to submission. Please be advised that you are
responsible for “policing” yourselves and dividing the work equally. In other words, everyone in a group is responsible
for ensuring that everyone else makes an equitable contribution. Each member of the group will earn the same grade for
his or her group’s paper. No extra credit will be given to nor will any credit be deducted from a group member who does
more work or less work, respectively. Also, each group member will be held equally responsible for academic dishonesty
regarding papers. In sum, please carefully consider with whom you choose to be in your group. For graduate-level
students only: The requirements for the paper are the same except you cannot work in a group.
Paper Topics
Your paper must be on one of the following three topics: (1) Nike’s new marketing campaign featuring Colin Kaepernick; (2) 9/11 – a
retrospective; (3) Academic freedom – for all or just those who are politically correct?

Outline for the Paper
The paper should consist of the following sections:
Introduction (1-2 pages): Tell me what you’re going to tell me. This should be short and to the point.
Body of the paper (8-10 pages): The two parts of the body are (1) summary of the issues and (2) analysis of multiple perspectives
of the ethical, legal, business, etc. issues presented by the topic. The summary should be approximately one-third of the body and the
analysis should be approximately two-thirds of the body. This is where you let me know what’s going on as well as your “take” as to
the issues involved. See the rubric set forth below for further details.
Conclusion (1-2 pages): Tell me what you just told me. This may be very similar to the introduction.
Also, as noted below under Citations, you must have footnotes; a bibliography is optional but can be helpful.
Please see the rubric on the next page for further details.
